Clarence Valley Council’s recently appointed General Manager Laura Black was jointly awarded the Champion of Change Award – Regional/Rural at the 2021 Minister’s Awards for Women in Local Government held at NSW Parliament House this week.

"The awards recognise the accomplishments and invaluable contribution of women in councils across NSW," Clarence Valley Mayor Ian Tiley said. "On behalf of Council I acknowledge and congratulate our General Manager on this prestigious recognition of her contribution to our Clarence Valley local government."

Ms Black was nominated for the award in her previous role as Director, Corporate and Governance at Clarence Valley Council before taking over the mantle of General Manager.

Member for Clarence Chris Gulaptis congratulated Ms Black and joint winner Rous County Council’s Group Manager – People and Performance Helen McNeill.

“It’s terrific knowing we have real champions of change right here in the Northern Rivers and I congratulate both Laura and Helen on their commitment and dedication in driving change in their respective roles," Mr Gulaptis said.

Minister for Local Government Wendy Tuckerman MP and Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor MLC both acknowledged the winners during the awards ceremony, thanking the award recipients for their efforts and contribution to local government.

“I am proud to celebrate the achievements of last year’s winners, and to thank these formidable and inspirational women who contribute so much to our local government sector,” Mrs Tuckerman said.

“All of these impressive women set an example for everyone when it comes to excellence in public service, and I commend them, along with all of the nominees,” Mrs Taylor said.

The Ministers’ Women in Local Government Awards were established in 2008 to recognise the outstanding efforts of women at the grassroots level of government in metropolitan and regional/rural councils.
